GMC SIERRA 2500 2024 POWER TRAIN
low
I was merging onto the highway in my 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4X equipped with the 6.6L Duramax engine at about 50mph when the gauge cluster emitted a “Reduced Acceleration Drive With Care” message followed by a check engine light. The check engine light presented indicated a “P0747” and “P0700” code. The vehicle was then stuck in 5th gear at highway speeds. Luckily there was no traffic present during this event due to the reduced acceleration of the vehicle and confusion caused to the operator. This could have been a dangerous situation due to the sudden change in handling of the vehicle. I have since then had the vehicle towed to the dealership in which it was purchased from for them to do their investigation to see how to fix the issue. This is a very well known issue with these GM heavy duty pickups. There is currently a recall on these trucks for this exact issue but my truck at this point in time is not included in said recall. I believe the recall is for 2020-2022 vehicles. Mine happens to be a 2024 which uses the same transmission as the older model vehicles in the recall. There are many other owners of these trucks like myself who have experienced this exact same issue. I’m sure this isn’t the first time this issue has been reported either. Something must be done about this.

Engine failure after passing PICO test. Engine completely locked up on a busy highway without the ability to even put it in neutral. Yes, confirmed by dealer that there were metal shavings in the fluid. Inspected by authorized dealer. No lights came on in the vehicle prior to the engine failure.

GMC SIERRA 1500 2024 ENGINE

Traveling Northbound in the left lane on [XXX] approximately 1 mile prior to the [XXX] exit. I increased my speed to move to the right lane and exit. After moving the the right lane and signaling to exit the highway a notification appeared on the gauge cluster stating to shift to neutral and restart the engine. After coming to a complete stop at the stop light I attempted to restart and nothing happened. I contacted OnStar for roadside assistance to get my truck and trailer towed and was informed they do not cover towing of the trailer. I accepted the tow of the truck and contacted the towing company who charged me $300 to tow my trailer 15 miles home. This happened late morning on Saturday and by Monday evening I was informed my engine seized and GM will be covering a replacement under warranty. My truck is less than two years old with 23K miles. The 6.2L engine was inspected a couple months earlier for the engine recall and was deemed ok. Clearly the inspection process is not very robust. I was told I could be without my truck for 1wk, 2wks, a month, but they are not sure since I’m 4th in line for a new engine and the truck first in line has already been there a month. I was also told GM is showing inventory in Michigan but the engines are not shipping. I’m currently waiting on a loaner vehicle but was told I cannot tow with the loaner vehicle which throws a wrench in my plans.
